orthoSIM is The European Simulation Service Provider for Orthopaedic Surgery. It aims at consolidating in the next years as the leading simulation service provider in Europe for orthopaedic-related problems. orthoSIM delivers added-value services around its main offer: virtual preoperative analyses of the behaviour of an orthopaedic implant after implantation in a customized implant-patient configuration.

Each year more than 1.100.000 of surgical interventions that require surgical implants are performed in Europe. A considerable amount of them are due to failures that could be prevented with a better preoperative analysis. This ‘e-health’ service should be indicated to all surgery interventions where implants are required and where patient-customised preoperative planning could improve clinical results.

The success of this project relies on the possibility to measure and assure the effectiveness of simulation in reducing uncertainty and improving the quality of surgery interventions. Users will be orthopaedic surgeons and implant designers. Purchasers will be implant manufacturers, hospitals and research laboratories. Benefits will be provided in form of savings to the health administrations, as well as improved care to the patients.

The orthoSIM platform is based on technologies developed between 2002 and 2004 within a European project called DEVASPIM, which resulted in a telematic simulation service based on an automatic and clinically validated Finite Element Model (FEM) of the lumbar spine and different spine implants evaluated. This platform was improved and its market validated in an ensuing eTEN European project called orthoSIM, which was successfully completed in 2007. At the end of 2007 another Leonardo European project for professional training called orthoTRAINING started and is currently in progress.
